Numerous lives were lost in a fatal Antique bus accident on Tuesday, December 5.

ANTIQUE BUS ACCIDENT – According to the reports, 25 passengers reportedly died after a Ceres bus fell into a cliff in Antique.

Denise Suropia of the Antique Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) reported that the Ceres bus overshot the permanent concrete barrier on a quite dangerous road in Hamtic, Antique. The road was in a mountainous area with zigzag paths.

The bus that fell in a ravine was carrying 53 passengers and 25 of them were killed.

Retrieval operations were done and the rescued survivors were taken to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital in San Jose de Buenavista for immediate treatment. According to the reports, it is the same spot where a bus also fell several years ago and this incident claimed a couple of lives.

Antique Information Officer of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Primrose Zamora expressed that an ocular inspection at the site will be done on Wednesday by their district engineer and other officials.

“Per information we had received, the Ceres bus had a mechanical failure that it overshot the barrier,” she said.

There will be Php 20,000 to be given to the killed victims as burial assistance directed by the Antique Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office. Among those who perished were the driver and conductor of the bus.

Meanwhile, the body count of the dead victims is feared to go higher as the retrieval operation is still ongoing.
