Surgeons From University of Washington Medical Center Remove Wrong Organ of Patient During Appendectomy
Surgeons from a medical center are set to face legal charges after mistakenly removing the wrong organ from a patient.
George Piano, a man from Washington, USA, who was initially admitted to the emergency room for appendicitis, ended up experiencing more pain after the surgeons removed a different organ.
The latter visited the medical center for a follow-up checkup. He learned that surgeons from the University of Washington (UW) Medical Center mistakenly removed the wrong organ.
On Thursday (November 9, 2023), the victim filed charges against the University of Washington and two surgeons involved in the surgical operation. The surgeons were identified as Nidhi Udyavar and Paul Herman.
Based on the 13-page suit, George stated that he was rushed to the health institution last December 6, 2022, for an appendectomy. The surgeons reportedly failed to locate his appendix during the surgery and removed a portion of his colon.
“Following surgery, Mr. Piano began to experience abdominal pain which was worse than before his surgery,” said the victim’s lawyers, Attorneys Ed Moore and Van Shaw.
“The bowel contents began to spill into his abdominal cavity causing him to become much sicker,” the lawyers added.
George underwent a CT scan, revealing that his appendix was still intact. A second surgery was then performed to remove the appendix. This medical mishap put George’s life at risk, and over nearly a year, he spent 53 days in the hospital, losing 40 lbs and suffering from anxiety and short-term memory loss.
Initially hesitant to file a lawsuit, George and his wife, Elizabeth, proceeded after receiving no response from the hospital. Their primary goal is to seek monetary damages for the physical and emotional toll.
George believes that someone needs to take responsibility and ensure that steps are taken to avoid such errors in the future. University of Washington Medicine declined to give a statement.
