PH Wasters Billions Worth of Rice Yearly
Filipinos must learn how to “be riceponsible” to mitigate the impacts of high rice prices and address wastage problem.
A lot of Filipino families are unfortunately living in poverty. The high costs of the basic goods and commodities now have made it even harder for many people to put food in the table. Egg, oil, and rice prices have greatly increased.

However, amid the common belief that everything seems pricey nowadays, as well as the call for the cost of a kilo of rice to be dropped to P20, reports state that PH has billions worth of rice wastage still annually.
PhilRice even said that the PH rice wastage could have fed 2.5 million people instead of being wasted. The government corporate entity which is under the Department of Agriculture (DA) has already reached out to some provinces, cities, and restaurants for partnership in setting half a cup of rice as the default serving.
There is also a campaign lead, the “Be Riceponsible”, amid such case of multi-billion worth of rice wastage in the country. I humbly support such campaign of encouraging Filipinos not to waste rice. While we are calling for the national government to exert maximum efforts to pull down the price of rice, we must do our fair share of not wasting it.
If we waste at least a kilo of rice in a week, it will be four (4) kilos in a month and the amount used in purchasing four (4) kilos of rice could be used for the other household needs instead. Rice wastage is not simply about wasting a part of the household’s monthly budget as well as the time and efforts of the farmers. It may only took a little energy of leaving your rice on your plate but in the case of farmers, it took them months to get to the harvest period of the rice crops.
