Ever heard of these Filipino Superstitions? Here are the associated stories behind them.

FILIPINO SUPERSTITIONS – The Philippines has a rich and colorful culture and traditions and here are some beliefs that play important roles.

We have our ancestors to thank for in terms of the set of traditions that we have been practicing for many years now. We have a lot of beliefs and practices that have an actual role in our culture and day-to-day life.

Some can bring good fortune while some are bad.

We have our “pamahiin” where some may sound strange, weird, and even unbelievable but there’s nothing wrong with believing them. Here are some that shaped our culture today.

Filipino Superstitions
  1. Oro, Plata, Mata
This means that the number of steps of staircases at home should not be divisible by three – “Oro (gold), plata (silver), mata (death)”. The last step should end with either oro or plata as mata denotes bad luck.
  2. Silong or Basement
This is uncommon in the Philippines. For a more logical reason, this is because the country is visited by multiple typhoons each year and this calamity brings floods. However, it is believed that low places like the basement are where malevolent spirits collect
  3. Padugo
This is the process where the blood of a chicken or pig is applied on the foundation of the house to keep the bad spirits away.
  4. Pintong Magkatapat
Two doors facing each other in a house are denoted in a negative way. This is because it is believed that when grace comes in one door, it will immediately go out through the other door.
  5. 13th Floor
Number thirteen is associated with misfortunes. This is why many building owners skip the 13th floor and go straight to the 14th floor.
  6. Pag-ikli
Pag-ikli means to shorten. This applies to house owners. According to this belief, shortening a house like remodeling it from two floors to one will shorten the life of the people living there.
