PHILIPPINES – Manila Luzon is seeking donations to cover the bail of Filipino drag artist Pura Luka Vega.
On Wednesday (October 4, 2023), the drag artist Amadeus Fernando Pagante or known as Pura Luka Vega was arrested and taken to the Manila Police District Station 3. The arrest is due to his controversial performance of “Ama Namin”.
The personality was arrested for offenses such as immoral doctrines, obscene publications, exhibitions and indecent shows. The bail is set to P72, 000. His arrest becomes one of the most discussed topics online.
Hijos del Nazareno, devotees of the Black Nazarene filed the case against the drag artist, alleging a violation of Revised Penal Code Article 201 and an attack on their religious beliefs.
Manila Luzon, recognizing the seriousness of the situation and the implications for the Filipino drag community, took to Instagram to call for donations. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum and “Drag Den Philippines” host Manila used her Instagram account to appeal for help.

In her post, she emphasized that “The Art of Drag in the Philippines is under attack.” She made a compelling argument that drag is not a crime and called for the release of Pura Luka Vega using the hashtag #FreePuraLukaVega.
Pura Luka Vega provided insight into the intent behind their controversial performance. He expressed that their rendition of “Ama Namin” was never meant to be disrespectful. Instead, it was a touching attempt to reconcile their Catholic faith with their queerness.

“I just want to create a narrative that despite all of these, Jesus, as the embodiment of God’s love for all, does not forget about the oppressed, including the LGBTQIA+ community,” Pagante said.
