Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Cagayan, October 4, 2023

EARTHQUAKE – The Phivolcs recorded a 5.7 magnitude quake in Cagayan today, Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

Following the 4.9 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur a few days ago, another significant quake was recently recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in another province. According to the agency, the quake that hit Cagayan has a magnitude of 5.7.

The earthquake today that struck Cagayan, Wednesday, October 4, 2023, was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit Dalupiri Island in Calayan.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Masbate was located at 19.26°North, 121.21°East – 017 km North 03° East of Dalupiri Island. It had a depth of focus of 017 kilometers.

Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that damages are not expected from the said quake but there might be aftershocks. According to the quake-recording agency, the following intensities and instrumental intensities were recorded in these areas:

    • Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte
    • Basco, Batanes
    • Angadanan, Cabagan, Maconacon, San Mariano, and San Pablo, Isabela

    • Balbalan, Lubuagan, and Pasil, Kalinga
    • Batac, Currimao, Marcos, Paoay, and Pinili, Ilocos Norte
  • Intensity IV
    • Lacub, Abra
    • Adams, Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Carasi, Dumalneg, City of Laoag, Pagudpud, Pasuquin, San Nicolas, and Sarrat, Ilocos Norte
    • Peñablanca, Piat, Santo Niño, Solana, and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan
  • Intensity V
    • Calayan, Cagayan

Instrumental Intensities:

  • Intensity II
    • Calayan, Cagayan
  • Intensity III
    • Batac, Ilocos Norte
  • Intensity IV
    • Laoag, and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte

Earthquakes are among the natural incidents that cannnot be predicted accurately as most experts in the field agree on. Thus, most countries really make sure that they have a bureau or an organization that monitors a quake incident across their nation.
