Lala Sotto Resignation Sought By Broadcast Communication Department Of UP

UP Diliman Department of Broadcast Communication is appalled and seeks the resignation of Lala Sotto as MTRCB Chair.

LALA SOTTO – The Department of Broadcast Communication of the University of the Philippines calls for the MTRCB’s resignation.

The current chairman of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) is Diorella Maria “Lala” Sotto-Antonio. She is the daughter of former senate president Tito Sotto.

The suspension of It’s Showtime for 12 airing days as declared by the MTRCB is a much-talked-about topic online. The decision, which is not yet final, is highly criticized online. The suspension stemmed from the alleged indecent acts displayed by hosts and real-life couple Vice Ganda and Ion Perez and among other cases of violations.

Lala was accused of targeting the Kapamilya show, the rival of her father’s show. However, in a previous article, she made it clear that the decision has nothing to do with anything. She stressed that the violations of the show are not the MTRCB’s fault.

Moreover, Lala inhibited from voting for the suspension of the show. The government agency released a statement and said that the chair’s decision to not vote is for “ensuring that members of the Board exercised their independent judgment in determining the appropriate course of action”.

Following the intrigues and controversies that came with the decision, the Department of Broadcast Communication of the University of the Philippines released a statement calling for the resignation of the current MTRCB chair.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the department expressed dismay at Sotto as she “evidently compromised her position and objectivity as a public official” when her agency sanctioned the Kapamilya show of 12-airing day suspension. It was a decision, according to them, that was lacking in wisdom and discernment.

Through the statement, they assert that the “sanction is nothing but severe”.

Apart from calling for Sotto’s resignation, they also called for the abolition of MTRCB for being “regressive”.

“A vestige of a regime of control and oppression, it proves, time and again, its being a bastion of conservatism. Its utter disregard for the show’s labor force which will be taking the brunt of the suspension contradicts any attempt at promoting sensitivity. It is outmoded and an exercise in futility,” it said.
