Despite Severe Flooding in Oton, Iloilo, 17 Couples Tie the Knot Recognizing the Importance of Marriage
17 couples exchanged their vows in the midst of a severe flood in Oton, Iloilo, in a display of love and commitment.
The floodwaters that overwhelmed the area did not stop these couples from celebrating their love and taking the sacred step of marriage. The couples chose to seal their love with a wedding ceremony, even as floodwaters surged around them.
Some of the couples even traveled through the rising waters on tricycles to reach the venue where their dreams would come true. “Grabe! Okay lang kahit binabaha basta matuloy ang kasal at na-bless kami ng simbahan,” said Geovanni Valle, one of the grooms.
Despite the challenging situation, the 17 pairs of sweethearts were determined to proceed with their plans recognizing the importance of the moment and the blessing of marriage.
According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), about 20 barangays in Oton were affected by the floods, prompting the evacuation of over 2,000 residents.
Normal life was disrupted by the floodwaters, including transportation and regular activities. Drivers were confronted with watery roads that had turned impassable due to the flooding.
“Bumara ang labasan ng ating tubig. Alam natin na ang baha sa Oton ay depende kapag high tide o low tide,” Oton MDRRMO head Malvin Nad said.
Typhoon Goring lashed the country with violent winds and torrential rains in recent days, which triggered massive flooding in several areas. The flooding displaced thousands of residents and temporarily resided in evacuation centers.
Given the adverse weather conditions, several local government units have announced the suspension of work and classes. This measure aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school staff members amid the inclement weather.
