Tropical Depression Outside PAR Intensifies Into Tropical Storm, PAGASA Says

PAGASA reported that a tropical depression outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility has developed into a tropical storm.

On Monday afternoon (August 28, 2023), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration reported that Tropical Storm Haikui was spotted 2,230 kilometers east of Northern Luzon.

Hakui has maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 80 kph. It may develop into a severe tropical storm within 36 hours. It is expected to enter PAR on Wednesday evening (August 30) or Thursday morning (August 31).

The tropical storm will be named “Hanna” once it enters the country’s vicinity. Hakui may intensify into a typhoon before entering PAR. Currently, Hakui is unlikely to affect the country’s weather conditions.

The current forecast scenario suggests that HAIKUI is less likely to directly affect the country,” PAGASA said.

However, the weather disturbance may affect the southwest monsoon, which will bring monsoon rains over the western portion of Luzon and Visayas.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that Typhoon Goring displaced nearly 2,000 individuals or about 500 families. Affected residents are currently sheltering in evacuation centers. As of this writing, no death toll has been recorded.
