President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced class suspension in Metro Manila and Bulacan on August 25, 2023 to give way for FIBA 2023.

FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will be held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City and Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan from August 25 to 30. The sport event will conclude from September 5-10, 2023 at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Aside from class suspension, Memorandum Circular No. 27 also states that government work is also suspended in the affected areas. Meanwhile, private schools and companies retain the authority to make their own decision.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has announced the suspension of classes in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Bulacan on August 25, 2023 for the FIBA opening event.

On Tuesday, August 15, 2023, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed Memorandum Circular No. 27, officially declaring the suspension of classes in public schools and government offices within the NCR and Bulacan on August 25, 2023 (Friday).

The memorandum aims to give way for the opening of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to take place at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

The event will also be held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City and the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City from August 25 to 30. FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 finals will be conducted at the Mall of Asia Arena from September 5-10, 2023.

The Philippines will collaborate with Japan and Indonesia in hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

However, the government employees assigned in performance of vital government services, delivering basic and health services, delivering basic and health services are still required to report to work.

Malacañang Palace emphasized that private schools and companies retain the authority to make their own decisions regarding classes and work arrangements during this period.

“In view of the commitment of the public sector towards wider involvement and participation in sports promotion and development, and in order to extend its full support and assistance to the Philippine Sports Commission in ensuring the safe, orderly, and successful conduct of the opening ceremonies of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, to be held at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan on 25 August 2023, work in government offices and classes in public schools at all levels in Metro Manila and the Province of Bulacan are hereby suspended on 25 August 2023,” the memorandum reads.
