12 Foods That Shouldn’t Be Stored in the Refrigerator
FOODS – Below is a compilation of common food items that are not suitable for refrigeration.
While it might seem instinctive to store almost anything in the refrigerator for prolonged freshness, some produce actually fares better at room temperature. After grocery shopping, placing food in the fridge to extend its shelf life appears to be the sensible approach.
However, this might not be the optimal storage method for all types of food. For certain produce, refrigeration could be detrimental to their flavor and nutritional properties.
Here are some examples:
Whole melons
Melons when stored at room temperature, develop higher levels of antioxidants like beta-carotene compared to refrigerated melons.
Basil
Storing basil below 40 degrees F can cause it to blacken quickly. It’s best to place it on the counter, submerged in water like a vase, with a plastic bag covering it.
Potatoes
Cold temperatures convert potato starch into sugar, resulting in an unpleasant texture and slightly sweet taste. Potatoes are best stored in a cool pantry.
Cucumbers
Refrigeration leads to watery and pitted cucumbers. It’s preferable to keep them outside the fridge.
Onions
They need air circulation to remain fresh and are best stored in a hole-punched paper bag in the pantry.
Tomatoes
Cool air alters chemical pathways in tomatoes, affecting their flavor. Store whole tomatoes on the counter for better taste.
Coffee
The moisture in the fridge can deteriorate coffee beans, affecting their flavor. It’s recommended to store them in an airtight container in the pantry.
Garlic
Garlic cloves fare best in temperatures between 60 and 65°F, so it’s ideal to store them in a ventilated container in a cool place.
Hot sauce
The vinegar and preservatives in hot sauce keep it from spoiling in the pantry, and refrigeration might reduce its spiciness.
Honey
Honey should not be refrigerated, as cold temperatures can cause it to crystallize. Room temperature is best for this sweetener.
Sliced bread
Storing bread in the fridge can prevent mold growth but also dries out the loaf. Extra bread can be kept in the freezer and brought to room temperature when needed.
Avocados
If hard or ripe and intended for immediate use, avocados are best kept at room temperature. If they tend to ripen quickly, they can be refrigerated to prolong freshness.
