Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte Admits Abuse During “War on Drugs” Campaign

RODRIGO DUTERTE – The ex-president admitted that there was abuse during his administration’s “war on drugs” campaign.

In an SMNI television interview, Duterte did not refute President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s claim that there was abuse in some government departments during his administration’s drug war. He stated that he read the transcript of Marcos’ speech in America and that it is acceptable to conclude that some law enforcement officials committed abuses.

“I am sure that if you read the context of the President’s speech which I had already, napiga ko na, he was a..tama siya. Tama siya na along the way in the enforcement of the law, a rigid attitude towards the enforcement of the law abuses will be committed,” he said.

“Ngayon sabihin ko I’ll go further, not only abuses sometimes killing unnecessarily. Along the way collateral damage marami yan. Those were never intended I’m sure by the law enforcement agency,” said former President Duterte.

The former President noted that Congress establishes the law, and the administration enforces it with the police to arrest criminals, and that there are instances when they become trapped in the situation, particularly when individuals who are to be detained resist arrest.

He claims that the public does not believe police enforcement can be outdone, and that when an unexpected incident occurs, human rights groups instantly create a fuss.

“So what’s the point in empowering somebody if you do not give him enough leeway because the obligation of the police dealing with criminals is when you are violating a law, ang pulis would go to you and arrest you, and if you resist the arrest, the police will have to overcome the resistance and drag you to the police station either hatakin ka niya ng buhay o patay. Yan ang problema na hindi nakikita ng publiko. So sometimes yung nakuha nila lumalaban, lasing. Pag makita ng human rights kasalanan na ng pulis,” Duterte added.

Despite this, the former President feels that President Marcos Jr. has no intention of bringing him or his former administration into disrepute. He stated that he had no intention of criticizing him because he understands how difficult it is to be President.

“I am not sure if he was quoted in the complete context of the statement. I am sure that it was not intended to criticize me because he knows how hard it is to be president. He is facing the serious problem right now,” said the former President.
