Package Declared as Cereals in Pasay City Contain Illegal Drugs

A Package Declared as Cereals in Pasay City Was Found to Contain Dried Opium Poppy Buds

Authorities discovered a package declared as “cereals” at the Central Mail Exchange Center in Pasay City containing dried opium poppy buds.

The consignee claimed that he bought the “medicine” for his back pain. According to reports, the package arrived from Spain on April 17 and was declared as cornflakes. However, authorities became suspicious after it passed through the X-ray machine.

The consignee was supposed to claim the package on Tuesday night but a K-9 inspection was conducted, and a narcotic detection dog sat on the package.

Upon opening the package, authorities found around five kilograms of dried opium poppy buds, which are prohibited in the country. According to the suspect, he has been living in Dasmariñas, Cavite for 15 years. He ordered the medicine online last month for his back pain and paid P10,000.

Nag-order na ako ng panggamot. Hindi ko na alam talaga anong bawal ba dito. Gamot sa sakit sa likod, sabi niya gamot lang. Hindi ko na alam talaga,” the suspect said.

The suspect may face charges for violating Section IV or importation of dangerous drugs under Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

This incident highlights the danger of buying medications online without proper verification of their legality. It is important for consumers to be cautious when purchasing medicines online, especially if they are not prescribed by a licensed physician.

The interception of this package is a significant achievement for the authorities in their ongoing efforts to stop the illegal drug trade in the Philippines. It is a reminder that everyone has a role to play in the fight against illegal drugs and that caution and vigilance are crucial in preventing the spread of this dangerous problem.
