NAIA Authorities Confiscate 3 kg of Suspected Illegal Drugs Disguised as Soap

The Philippines has been grappling with a persistent problem of illegal drug use and trafficking for many years. Despite various efforts by the government to curb the drug menace, it continues to be a major challenge for law enforcement agencies in the country.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration has taken a hardline stance against illegal drugs, launching a nationwide anti-drug campaign in 2016. The campaign has been marked by a controversial policy of extrajudicial killings.

Despite the controversial tactics used by law enforcement agencies, the drug problem in the Philippines continues to persist. The country remains a major transit point for the trafficking of illegal drugs, with drug syndicates taking advantage of its strategic location and weak law enforcement capabilities.

Customs authorities at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila, Philippines, seized around three kilograms of suspected cocaine disguised as soap from a Turkish national on Monday (March 20, 2023).

The authorities intercepted a foreign national arriving from Dubai who was found to be carrying bar soaps and 1.5 liters of liquid, suspected to be an illegal drug. The illegal drugs were discovered during a routine baggage check at Terminal 3 of the airport.

According to reports, customs officials noticed irregularities in the appearance of several soap bars in the passenger’s checked-in baggage. Upon closer inspection, they discovered that the soap bars contained a white powdery substance that was later confirmed to be cocaine.
