Meet White Man, a Senior High School Student Who Also Works as Street Artist in Bacolod City
Meet the senior high school student named Ritchard Obina known as White Man, the new street artist in Bacolod City.
Meet the latest sensation in Bacolod, a city in the Philippines, who goes by the moniker “the White Man”. This street artist has been making waves with his unique art form, reminiscent of living statues.
While Baguio has the Green Man and Cebu has the Blue Man, Bacolod now boasts its own talented street performer who transforms himself into a white statue.
White Man is actually a senior high school student named Ritchard Obina, who spends two hours on his transformation after school. Once ready, he heads downtown to perform, sometimes for as long as three hours and even as high as seven hours.
Ritchard shares that this is his passion and he takes pride in doing it for his family and his education.
“Pagkatapos ko po ng klase, umuwi po ako sa bahay tapos po inaayos ko na costume ko. Then, aalis na po ako, doon po ako nagbibihis. Nagpe-perform po ako sa downtown, minsan po tatlong oras. Ang pinaka-mataas ko po ng oras is seven hours,” Obina said.
Though he doesn’t perform every day, Ritchard’s earnings from his performances, which usually range from P200-P300 and sometimes as much as P700, go a long way in helping his family.
Living statues have been around for centuries and have been seen in many parts of the world. Historians believe that the art form dates back to the medieval period.
During the Renaissance era, it was known as Tableau Vivant, where artists dressed up and painted themselves and then remained still for extended periods of time so that people could better visualize the theme they were trying to convey.
In Bacolod, the White Man has joined the ranks of these talented performers, bringing his own unique flair to the art form and showcasing the creativity and talent of the Filipino people.
