Family in Camarines Sur Seeks Help in Battling Pest Infestation

Family in Camarines Sur Expresses Frustration After Pest Infestation Devastated Their Rice Crops

The family of Laileen Azaña from Siruma, Camarines Sur in the Philippines is deeply saddened by what has happened to their rice crop. A pest infestation, specifically the Brown Plant Hopper, has caused their entire harvest to wither and dry up.

Despite their efforts, they were unable to save their precious crop.

Azaña’s family had reported the issue to the Municipal Agriculture Office, seeking assistance. However, they were disheartened to learn that their crops were not insured, leaving them vulnerable to the devastating effects of the pest infestation.

Laileen’s father, who has dedicated a lot of time and effort to planting the rice, has been particularly affected by this loss.

In an effort to find a solution, Azaña’s family reached out to the Department of Agriculture through the Bicol Network on Farmers’ Mutual Aid (BNFM). They were relieved to hear that the Regional Crop Protection Center had visited their rice fields in Fundado and Tongo and had provided them with pesticides to control the pest infestation.

The authorities have also taken action to address the problem.

The Municipal Agriculture Office has reported that four barangays (villages) have been affected by the Brown Plant Hopper infestation, and they are continuing to work closely with the Department of Agriculture – Bicol (DA Bicol) to address the issue and provide assistance to the affected farmers.

The family remain hopeful that with collective efforts, they will be able to recover and rebuild their rice crop, which is not only their source of livelihood but also a vital staple for their community.
