Bill to Reduce 8-Hour Class Shift for Public Teachers to 6-Hours

Bill Seeks to Reduce Public Teachers 8-Hour Class Shift to 6-Hours

Solon filed a house bill that seeks to reduce the 8-hour class shift of teachers to a 6-hours in public schools.

Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro’s 2nd district filed House Bill No. 7822, which seeks to decrease public school teachers’ eight-hour classes to six hours. This is to promote the well-being of “overworked” teachers and to improve the country’s basic education standards.

Teachers Class Shift Bill

According to Rodriguez, chairman of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendments, teachers’ class times should be changed to allow them more time to develop lesson plans and instructional materials. This will allow teachers to spend more time interacting with students during co-curricular events.

“Their work site is not limited to the classroom,” ani Rodriguez. “Teachers perform a regular eight-hour work shift just like any average laborer. Six hours of that shift may be spent in the lecture hall, and two hours are spent in lesson-plan preparation, lecture planning, and student-parent consultations,” he said, based on the article in Manila Bulletin.

He noted that the measure will also enable teachers to execute additional tasks allocated to them by their administrator or superior. The legislator further stated that he is optimistic that Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte will support the proposed legislation.

There are around 876,642 public school instructors in basic education, according to DepEd. With somewhat more than 28 million students enrolled in the 2021-2022 school year, the nationwide teacher-to-learner ratio for elementary is 1:27; 1:24 for junior high; and 1:27 for senior high.
