5 OFWs in UAE Arrested for Posting Inappropriate Tiktok Video

Five OFWs in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) were jailed after their posted TikTok video on social media was reported.

According to reports, five OFWs who were friends and working in Sharjah, UAE, have been detained in jail after posting a Tiktok video on March 12, 2023. The video was supposed to be a harmless joke and was shared on social media, but it ended up causing trouble for the five workers.

The authorities received a complaint about the video, which led to their arrest and detention. The details of the case were provided by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Toots Ople.

“They have been arrested they were brought to jail and may case number na at hihintayin na lang natin yung schedule ng court hearings sa sharjah court. Meron na silang legal retainer na nakuha para irepresent itong karapatan nitong ating limang OFWs sa korte,” Ople said.

The Philippine Embassy and Labor Attache in the UAE are already working to help the five OFWs. They plan to visit them in jail and talk to their employer to resolve the issue.

However, the situation is quite serious, and the workers are facing possible fines and imprisonment of up to five years, according to the cybercrime law in the UAE.

“UAE is strictly implementing its cyberlaw and is also very sensitive to actions against their customs and morality. Iba ang kultura nila eh so we have to be very very respectful,” he added.

This case serves as a reminder for all OFWs to be careful about what they post on social media, especially in countries that have strict laws and regulations regarding online content.

It is important to be mindful of the cultural norms and laws of the country where you work and reside to avoid any legal problems or misunderstandings.

The social media users expressed their reactions to the post:

  1. Just INSANE. Arresting people just having private fun? I’m mean they’re acting like they got naked in public or something. NEVER expected UAE to be like Iran or maybe even worse (seeing another Filipino guy got arrested for just making a video of dancing in a Metro bus).
