57-Year-Old Woman Jailed After Calling Her Niece a “Thief”
A 57-year-old woman from Barangay Tubigagmanok, Asturias town in midwest Cebu lands in jail for calling her niece a ‘thief’.
Lelita Bornia, a married woman from Sitio North Guinabasan, Barangay Tubigagmanok, Asturias town in midwest Cebu, was arrested at 4:30 p.m. by police. On Friday, March 31, 2023, her niece, Jonalyn Paul, of legal age, whose husband is a Filipino-American, filed a complaint.
Bornia was arrested for grave oral defamation, according to the warrant of arrest issued by Judge Mary Jocelyn Regencia of the Municipal Circuit Trial Court of Balamban-Asturias, which is dated March 27, 2023.
According to Master Sergeant Ronald Duran of the Asturias Police Station, Bornia is expected to post bail for P18,000 on Monday (April 3, 2023).
However, Bornia denied the allegations against her when asked for comment, saying she did not fabricate stories about her niece’s arrest for theft in Manila. Their misunderstandings have been ongoing since 2021, she added.
The barangay called Bornia and Paul for an investigation in an attempt to reconcile, but they failed to settle the issue. Bornia revealed that her niece became angry when she asked her to repay a loan.
Paul had borrowed P10,000 from a lending company under Bornia’s name but failed to repay it. Additionally, Paul used Bornia’s name to buy cosmetics on credit without paying for them.
“Siya ra nagtumo-tumo ana estorya aron iyaha ko nga makasuhan,” Bornia said.
Bornia stated that she is prepared to defend herself in court.
