Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte on ICC: “If I rot in prison, so be it”

Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte Ready to Face the Charges to be Filed by ICC

RODRIGO DUTERTE – The ex-president of the Philippines says he is ready to face the charges that will be filed by International Criminal Court (ICC).

Duterte seems unconcerned about the ongoing issue of the ICC probe into his administration’s contentious drug campaign.  After the ICC denied his request to delay its investigation into his violent drug campaign, Duterte claimed he would “face the music” and “rot in prison.”

“I would like to reiterate my statement, kayong mga ICC… wala akong pakialam. Wala akong pakialam basta ginawa ko yung dapat kong gawin  ” said Duterte, speaking before the National Convention of the Philippine Prosecutor’s League in Davao City.

The ICC denied the Philippine government’s request to pause its investigation in a ruling dated March 27. As a result, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan has been permitted to continue probing Duterte’s drug war.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who ran as Duterte’s successor in the 2022 elections, said the decision indicated the Philippines will “disengage” from the ICC. During his six-year rule, the former President stated that he would risk his reputation, honor, and office to combat illegal narcotics and criminality.

“Dito sa droga, sa criminality, just like Davao, it is a matter of principle for me. And I will die for it. If I rot in prison, so be it. If it turns out to be awful later, wala tayong magawa. I’ll face the music. I will rot in prison. I will die in prison, he said.

His murderous campaign took a terrible toll: according to government data, 6,252 people were killed in police anti-illegal drug operations as of May 2022. Human rights organizations claim that between 27,000 and 30,000 Filipinos were slain in a vigilante manner in the name of Duterte’s drug war.

The drug war was one of Duterte’s primary campaign promises in 2016. In interviews, public speeches, and official decrees, Duterte claimed to eradicate illegal narcotics in the Philippines within three to six months after taking office.
