Former OFW Arrested for Pretending as Wowowin Winner & Asking Gcash Load
A former OFW was arrested for pretending as a Wowowin winner and requesting a Gcash load without having any cash.
A former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) has been arrested in San Nicolas, Pangasinan after attempting to use an online payment application to cash in an amount of ₱18,000 without having enough funds to cover the transaction.
The suspect has been identified as May Soriano, a resident of San Nicolas. According to reports, Soriano went to a local store to make the cash-in transaction through G-CASH, a popular mobile wallet service in the Philippines.
Soriano allegedly claimed that she had won a large sum of money on the popular game show Wowowin, and would be able to pay the store owners once she received her winnings. Unconvinced by her story, the store owners immediately contacted the police.
The police arrived at the scene and apprehended Soriano, who was subsequently charged with fraud.
The incident has sparked concerns about the growing trend of online fraud and scams in the Philippines. While mobile wallet services like G-CASH have made financial transactions more convenient for many Filipinos, they have also opened up new opportunities for fraudsters and scammers.
Authorities are urging the public to be vigilant when using online payment applications and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately. They also advise users to make sure they have enough funds in their accounts before attempting to make any transactions to avoid similar incidents.
