Cham Tanteras Says BI Officer Also Took Her Phone, Checked Her Emails

BI Officer Allegedly Took Cham Tanteras’ Phone, Checked Her Emails

CHAM TANTERAS – Passenger Cham Tanteras said the Bureau of Immigration (BI) officer also took her phone and checked her emails.

Recall the Filipino passenger who allegedly missed her flight to Israel after an immigration official allegedly asked her “irrelevant” questions and show her yearbook. She claimed that the officer checked her emails and took her phone as well.

The officer allegedly inquired about Cham Tanteras’ travel booking in an interview with TeleRadyo on Monday, March 20. She responded positively and prepared to present the printed copy of her confirmation when the officer instructed her that he would verify it himself. “Sabi niya, siya raw magche-check sa phone ko. So siya yung nagscroll sa emails sa phone ko,” Cham said.

Cham Tanteras has previously been questioned about her parent relationship as well as her college graduation. Cham said the officer asked her for a yearbook as proof when she claimed to have graduated ten years ago.

She was asked for her graduation picture instead, noting that it would be cumbersome and impractical to transport while traveling, especially to Israel. She may display a wacky photo from her phone, but the officer questions whether it really is her because she appears to be “fat” in the picture.

Cham also had to compose an essay about boodle and freelancing and complete a border control questionnaire form, which caused her to miss her flight. She was forced to book another flight the very next day for P27,000 after paying P19,000 for the missed one.

Cham Tanteras also told TeleRadyo that the officer may have been too intrusive because she was traveling alone to Israel for Christmas. She made it clear that she merely went as a tourist.

“Nagsabi ako na magta-travel ako for Christmas tapos babalik din dahil may return flight naman ako… Sinabi ko rin naman na gusto kong mag-travel alone sa Pasko, sa birthplace ni Jesus,”  she said.

According to Dana Sandoval, a BI spokeswoman, the officer who spoke with Cham has already been transferred to a back office. She said the officer in question also denied requesting Tanteras’ yearbook.

Furthermore, Sandoval emphasized that passengers are not required to show, much less bring, their graduation yearbook to the airport.
