John Matthew Salilig Issue: President Marcos Releases Statement

President Bongbong Marcos assures justice will be served regarding John Matthew Salilig Case.

JOHN MATTHEW SALILIG – President Bongbong Marcos releases a statement about the case of the alleged hazing victim John Matthew Salilig.

On Wednesday, March 1, students and other members of the Adamson University community wore black and lit candles for the passing of their “klasmeyt” John Martin Salilig.

Salilig is a 3rd-year chemistry student at Adamson University and the community are calling for justice in his death, allegedly from hazing. A mass was also held for their fallen “klasmeyt” and the activities were capped with a candle-lighting activity.

The 24-year-old student was found dead in Imus City, Cavite on Tuesday. He’s been missing for a week after attending the welcoming rites of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity.

This has reached President Bongbong Marcos. In a statement, the current president firmly expressed his disagreement with student organizations that practice violence. He stressed in his statement that “there should be no room for violence in our student organizations which our children consider as family, and in our schools which they consider their second home”.

He noted that the strength of brotherhood is never measured with violence.

He also condoles with the Salilig family and gave them an assurance that justice will be served.

15 persons of interest in the alleged hazing death of the Adamson student were tagged. Police investigators also confirmed previously that Salilig died from “physical trauma” from two hazing rites of Tau Gamma Phi Grand Fraternity – one in its chapter in Zamboanga City and then in Binan, Laguna.

If proven true, this is a clear violation of the Republic Act (RA) 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Law.

Last Tuesday, his lifeless body was discovered buried and decomposing in a vacant lot in Barangay Malagasang Imus, Cavite.
