Senior Citizen Goes Viral Online for Selling Crocheted Goods to Fund Son’s Dialysis Treatment

A senior citizen selling crocheted goods to raise funds for his son’s dialysis treatment goes viral online.

Elderly vendors have become an increasingly common sight in many parts of the world. These individuals, often well into their retirement years, are turning to sell various goods and services to supplement their incomes and provide for their families.

While some may view elderly vendors as a symbol of economic hardship and social inequality, others see them as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of older adults.

Recently, a 73-year-old man named Emerberto “Tatay Emer” Bongabong became an internet sensation after a fourth-year college student from Davao City named Marvie Joy Vicente Oliamot shared his story and photos of his crocheted products on social media.

Bongabong sells crocheted wallets, tumbler carriers, and mobile phone holders to raise money for his son’s dialysis treatment and to support his family. He usually sells his products for prices ranging from P50 to 250 at Bankerohan and Davao Doctors College, Inc.

“Makikita po ninyo itong si tatay na naglalakad sa gitna ng [tirik] na araw para lang masuportahan ang kanyang pamilya at lalo na para sa pagda-dialysis ng kanyang anak,” Oliamot said.

His products can be viewed on the “Davao macrame and souvenirs” products Facebook page. Those who are interested in buying his handmade crafts can message him through his son Bert Bong’s Facebook account.

“Marami pa pong ibang pagpipilian na napakaganda at dekalidad, sa presyong abot kaya. Hinding-hindi po kayo magsisisi sa kanyang mga likha,” Oliamot added.
