Maria Clara at Ibarra showcased amazing costumes

The costumes in Maria Clara at Ibarra are among the factors why the viewers are loving this Kapuso historical portal drama series.

The costume department of MCAI is under the supervision of scenographer and fashion historian Gino Gonzales and production designer Bill Gustillo.

Raroque shared that they had a hard time procuring embroidered piña fabrics during their pre-production because due to the pandemic, many lost their jobs, and this industry was greatly affected and some resorted to seeking other jobs. “We’re just happy that we were able to shine a light on these amazing craftspeople and their works,” he said.

Since the costumes in Maria Clara at Ibarra were based on the 1884 to the late 1890s setting, they are more costly than the modern casual everyday outfits.

For our main cast, we didn’t skimp on the materials for our costumes. We made sure that they were all as authentic as possible. So for Crisostomo, Simoun, Fidel, Maria Clara, and Klay’s looks, we spent roughly around P30,000 to P40,000 per set, for materials, labor and accessories,” Arceo shared.

The costumes worn by the friars are made out of thick brown wool. These used the same fabric used by the Franciscan monks. Each habit costs around P15,000.

Arceo added that it overwhelms them when they read comments from fans and avid viewers saying that the characters’ costumes are what they imagined them to be. “We tried as much as possible to be accurate and not to revise history. It’s a constant balance with providing costumes that are visually impactful and historically correct,” he said.
