Paul Soriano On Why Some PH Films Are “Flop”, Out Of Cinemas

Here’s the reason why some PH films are not striving in cinemas as per Paul Soriano, “My Teacher” director.

PAUL SORIANO – Film director Paul Soriano speaks about Philippine movies that are not striving in the cinemas.

Pres. Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s Presidential Adviser for Creative Communications is film director Paul Soriano. The film director is an avid and loyal supporter of the current president. He was appointed for the public post.

Despite his position to serve the country, he still continued making films and the most recent he did is “My Teacher”. This film is among the official entries of the Metro Manila Film Festival 2022 and stars Toni Gonzaga, his wife who he said is currently the most powerful celebrity.

However, Toni’s most powerful status according to her husband did not move their film to the top earners of MMFF 2022. It also received 3.5 out of 10 stars on the fan and critical film review website IMDb.

Speaking about PH films being out of the cinemas, Soriano said that there are certain reasons for this like high ticket prices. Based on his perspective, a person can accordingly afford one or two films, at most, which is why the other films were neglected.

He said, “The only reason why I think there is only one or two big [hits] is because the general public can only afford to watch one film, or maybe two at most, so that’s why the other five or six films don’t get seen,” said Soriano.

The reason why “nobody is watching it” as per him is due to high ticket prices. With that being said, he saw an opportunity that perhaps, if “Libreng Sakay” happened, “Libreng Cinema” will also be possible.

Another reason he sees is the competition against foreign movies and blockbusters. Based on a report from Inquirer, Disney Studios’ Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) is among the major competition.
