Desperate Man in Equador Legally Changes Gender to Female to Gain Custody of Children
A desperate man legally changes his gender to “Female” in a bid just to gain custody of his two young children.
A 47-year-old man from Ecuador identified as René Salinas Ramos has changed his gender to female but still uses the same birth name and identifies as a cisgender male. He shifts gender to gain custody of his two daughters.
According to Salinas Ramos, he made the dramatic decision to get around Ecuadorian law, which favors mothers over fathers when it comes to child custody. The latter explained that he can also perform motherly chores such as ironing and cooking.
“I am very sure of my sexuality. What I have sought is that I want to be a mother so that I can also give the love and protection of a mother,” Ramos said.
The desperate man claimed his children were living in an abusive environment with their mother. He added that it has been more than five months since he last saw them and that being a father in Ecuador is “punished,” as one is solely viewed as a “provider.”
“The laws say that the one who has the right is the woman, As of this moment, I am female. Now I’m also a mom, that’s how I consider myself.” Salinas Ramos added.
However, LGBTQ+ activists react after hearing the move of Ramos. Ecuadorian Federation of Organizations national director Diane Rodriguez claimed that Salinas Ramos’s move isn’t the spirit of the law promoting transgender rights.
“I understand that in his situation, in desperation, he chose to change the gender on the identity document, But no, it won’t have any effect.” Rodriguez said.
