Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Surigao del Norte, January 3, 2023
EARTHQUAKE SURIGAO DEL NORTE – The Phivolcs recorded a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in Burgos, Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
Following the 5.1 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur a few hours ago, another strong quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Surigao del Norte. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 4.8.
The earthquake that struck Surigao del Norte on January 3, 2023 was tectonic in origin. It specifically hit Burgos.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake that hit a part of Surigao del Norte was located at 10.36°North, 126.12°East – 039 km North 05° East of Burgos with a depth of focus of 022 kilometers.
Phivolcs stated in its bulletin that no damages are expected from the said quake as well as aftershocks. According to the agency, Intensity II was felt in the following areas:
- Southern Leyte
- San Ricardo
- San Francisco
- Pintuyan
- Hinunangan
- Silago
- Hinundayan
- Leyte
- Dulag
- Palo
The following instrumental intensities were recorded of the said quake:
- Intensity III
- Borongan City, Eastern Samar
- Intensity II
- San Francisco, Southern Leyte
- Quinapondan, Eastern Samar
- Surigao City, Surigao Del Norte
- Intensity I
- Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte
- Abuyog, Baybay, Dulag, Leyte
- Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte
