Mom and 3-Year-Old Child Rescued After 3 Days Drifting at Sea Amid Flood

MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL – A desperate mom and her three-year-old child have been rescued by fishermen after three days at sea amid the flooding.

A 34-year-old woman identified as Christelyn Lomo narrated that heavy rains pour down last Christmas Day. The incessant rains make floodwater increase quickly and washed away their house in Misamis Occidental.

Lomo and her child who were on the second floor of their house failed to escape due to the sudden increase of floodwater. She lifted her child to survive until the debris hit her. After a few moments, the woman realized that they were already drifting at sea.

“Hindi na kami makalabas kasi ang lakas na ng agos ng tubig. Nung natabunan na kami ng bahay, pilit ko siyang itinulak pataas para ma-save siya, tumambak na sakin [ang] mga bubong, mabigat talaga. Akala ko babawian na ako ng buhay kasi ininom ko na ‘yung tubig dagat hanggang nakaahon ako,” Lomo said.

The desperate lady had no choice but to on some floating wood to survive. A few days passed by but no one came for rescue. Out of desperate, Lomo and her child consumer live fish while drifting in the open sea.

“Nagugutom na anak ko, naghahanap siya ng pagkain. Buti may lumapit na papaya, kinain namin. May isda rin, kinain namin kahit buhay pa. Tapos naghahanap ako ng tubig. Sabi ko, ‘Anak, inumin mo na lang tubig dagat.’ Ayaw niya inumin, kaya sabi ko, ‘Look up,’ kasi umuulan, para makainom ng tubig ulan. Ayaw niya, hanggang nakakita ako ng coconut. Pinukpok ko hanggang nabiyak. Ininom niya iyong sabaw,” Lomo added.

Christelyn also recounted on how her makeshift raft broke many times until some fishermen using a pump boat found them.

A state of calamity has been declared in the province of Misamis Occidental, as well as the city of Gingoog in Misamis Oriental due to the massive flooding.
