Joey de Leon and Toni Gonzaga’s movie joins MMFF 2022
Henyo Master Joey de Leon said this when he accepted the movie project, My Teacher, with Ultimate Multimedia Star Toni Gonzaga.
It is not Joey’s first time working with Toni. Before transferring to ABS-CBN, Toni became one of the co-hosts of the longest-running noontime show Eat Bulaga in which Joey is one of the pioneer hosts.
My Teacher is directed by Toni’s husband director Paul Soriano. In a recent interview, based on the article in Abante, the filmmaker revealed that if Joey de Leon turned down the offer to do this movie, they won’t do the project anymore.
However, the Henyo Master did not hesitate to accept the movie offer. Direk Paul shared that Joey said, “Basta para kay Toni, gagawin ko. Malakas si Toni sa akin!” This is the reason why Paul and Toni were “todo alaga” when it comes to Joey on the movie set.
As restrictions and protocols are still being observed when they started filming due to the pandemic, the production really took care of the veteran comedian-host. “He’s Joey de Leon. He’s really funny. Icon ‘yan,” Direk Paul said.
The filmmaker also expressed that working with the icon is something he is happy about. As a young director, in his filmography, it is an honor that he has worked with “the Joey de Leon,” especially since the Henyo Master has not been doing movies these past years.
“I think his last movie was sabi niya, decade ago, e, di ba? So I said this might be a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Direk Paul said.
Just like other Metro Manila Film Festival entries, My Teacher will also premiere on December 25. The movie also features Ronnie Alonte, Loisa Andalio, Carmi Martin, Rufa Mae Quinto, Kakai Bautista, Jackie Lou Blanco, Pauline Mendoza, and Kych Minemoto.
