Airports are among the places where tight security measures are implemented. There are checking of the things of the passengers and there are those that are not allowed for travel. Restrictions were also heightened when the COVID-19 pandemic happened across the globe. Meanwhile, amid the opening of borders in most countries now, the restrictions have been eased.
Daily, there are several domestic and international flights that depart and arrive at the different terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Recently, at NAIA 2, the officials of the Bureau of Customs (BuCor) found jewelry amounting to a huge amount.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the BuCor officials found jewelry worth P80 million inside the plastic bags at a lavatory of an airplane that landed in NAIA 2. The said plane, Philippine Airlines (PAL) flight PR301, was from Hong Kong.
According to BuCor Deputy Collector for Passenger Services Attorney Lourdes Mangaoang, she got a call from the Aircraft Operations Division saying that they found plastic bags inside the lavatory of the plane. The flight was Thursday night and they initially thought that the plastic bags contain drugs.
Following the actual inspection of the plastic bags kept at the lavatory of the plane, BuCor found jewelry weighing around 24.4 kilograms. Based on the report, they were appraised to be worth P80 million.
According to Mangaoang, Airport Customs District Collector Carmelita Talusan has ordered for a probe on the incident to determine the identity of the person involved. The authorities suspect that an insider or someone who knows about the operations inside the plane is involved in the hiding of the jewelry that were neatly put inside the lavatory. More updates may be posted soon.
