Mary Jane Veloso’s Case: Malacañang Says Why Marcos Jr. Yet to Make Statement

MARY JANE VELOSO’S CASE – Malacañang expressed why President Bongbong Marcos has not made a statement yet regarding the case.

Recently, the Philippine government affirmed that a request was made to the Indonesian government regarding the clemency of Mary Jane Veloso. It reportedly happened during the sidelines of the trip of Pres. Bongbong Marcos in Singapore. Recently, Malacañang explained why the President has yet to make a statement regarding the case. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the Palace stressed that the President will not speak about the case until there is development. Furthermore, it assured that Veloso is being assisted and the PH government also does not want to “transgress the sovereignty of another state”.

MARY JANE VELOSO – Here are some details about the personal background of the Filipina who’s in a death row in Indonesia.

Every nation has its own set of rules that apply to the citizens and those people from other races who will be visiting, working, or living in their country. When it comes to drugs, one of the strictest country is Indonesia.

One of those people who are currently in jail due to drugs is Filipina Mary Jane Veloso. She is in jail in Indonesia for 12 years now and is on a death row.

Born on January 10, 1985 in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Mary Jane is the youngest among the five children of Ceasar Veloso and Celia Veloso. She attended school until she reached dropped out. She was 17 years old when she married. She and her then husband were blessed with two (2) sons. However, they separated.

Prior to her arrest in Indonesia

Mary Jane worked in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for half a year. According to Mary Jane’s father, his daughter left her job abroad because her employed allegedly attempted to take advantage of her. She went home to the Philippines and started a business in Cabanatuan. She had a business peddling plastic containers but it was not successful.

In April 2010, Mary Jane was arrested in Indonesia after drugs were found in her luggage. Throughout the trial, she pledged not guilty saying that she was only asked to bring the suitcase by her godsister, Maria Kristina Sergio. According to her, her godsister was the one who convinced her to apply for a job in Indonesia after she lost her job in Malaysia.

In October 2010, she was sentenced to death. The moratorium on capital punishment by the Indonesia President Susilo Bambang Yudhono spared her and the capital punishment was re-scheduled in January 2015.

Sergio, her alleged recruiter, and Julius Lanilao, the live-in partner of Maria Kristina, surrendered to the authorities paving the way for the Philippine government to be able to convince Indonesia to postpone the capital sentence.

Currently, the family of Mary Jane is hopeful that they will be reunited once again. She is in jail for 12 years now and her eldest son is already 20 years old.
