Controversial director-writer Darryl Yap revealed why the EDSA Anniversary pushed him to make the movie Maid in Malacañang.

Direk Darryl is one of the showbiz personalities who supported and campaigned for the UniTeam, the slate of the winning candidates, President Bongbong Marcos, and Vice President Sara Duterte. Through his videos on the social media platforms of Vincentiments, the director featured political satire.

These videos undoubtedly became hits with accumulated millions of views across different platforms. After the election, Direk Darryl hint at the movie that he was pitching to Viva Films. It was about the last 72 hours of the Marcoses in the Palace.

Maid in Malacañang is now a blockbuster hit and screenings abroad have started. In a recent video posted on the Twitter account of @Paps_Caloy that was taken during a media conference, Direk Darryl Yap revealed the factor that prompted him to create a movie about the Marcoses.

He said that during the campaign period, on February 25, to be exact, he was in the San Juan mansion. The said date was also the EDSA Anniversary. The director-writer said that he was surprised that day when many people started to arrive.

He found out that those people were former maids, former drivers, and relatives. “Alam niyo kung ano ang sini-celebrate nila sa San Juan? Sa araw ng EDSA? EDSA Survivor day,” Direk Darryl shared. He also said that every February 25, when people are celebrating at Highway 54 or ESDA, the Marcos family and the Malacanang household gather together in San Juan.

“Nag-iiyakan, inaalala ang nangyari sa kanila sa loob ng Malacanang,” he said. Upon seeing this scenario, Direk Darryl said that it would be impossible for him not to make a movie about this. He said that February 25 is a celebration for them that they survive what happened inside the Palace. “That is the real reason why we have Maid in Malacañang,” Darryl Yap said.
