DOH Speaks on Patients of the First 2 Cases of BA.2.75 in PH

DOH – The Department of Health confirmed the first two (2) cases of the omicron subvariant BA.2.75 or Centaurus in the Philippines.

The threats of the COVID-19 virus are still present and subvariants continue to emerge. Amid the easing of restrictions in several nations, the World Health Organization (WHO) reminded countries that the pandemic is not over somewhere if it is not over everywhere. According to the international health body, the pandemic is “nowhere near over”.

The WHO is expecting a rise in the cases in countries in Europe this summer due to the loose quarantine measures. There are also subvariants now that are known to be more transmissible compared to the previous variants and subvariants of COVID-19.

In the Philippines, the country remains under restrictions through the alert level system. Most areas including Metro Manila are under Alert Level 1 now, the loosest alert level. Meanwhile, the health authorities continue to remind the public to practice the proper health protocols.

However, the Philippines has also recorded its first cases of the omicron subvariant BA.2.75 which is causing alarm in other nations. It was confirmed by the Department of Health (DOH) who revealed that both patients are from Western Visayas.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, DOH said that both patients of omicron subvariant BA.2.75 “Centaurus” have recovered. According to Health Officer-in-Charge Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire, one of the patients was vaccinated once while the other was unvaccinated. Their exposure and history of travel have yet to be determined.

Vergeire stressed that the Centaurus is more transmissible based on the studies and its behavior in other nations. It was found to also have more immune invasion compared with BA.5 but there is still no evidence that it can cause a more severe infection.
