Landslides & Aftershocks Possible After Magnitude 7.3 Quake, Phivolcs Says
The state volcanology agency Phivolcs reported that landslides and aftershocks are possible following the powerful quake in Luzon.
On Wednesday (July 27, 2022), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded a 7.3 magnitude quake in Abra. The powerful tremor hit a part of Abra at 08:43 am.
Phivolcs reported that tremor at 17.63° North, 120.74°East – 002 km North 20° East of Lagangilang with a depth of origin of 025 kilometers. The earthquake is tectonic in origin and no instrumental intensity was recorded as of this writing.
The strong earthquake brings severe ground shaking that causes damage to several establishments and properties in the area. The violent shaking also shuts down the power lines in different parts of the province.
Recently, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum warned the public of possible landslides and aftershocks. He also told the Filipinos may spot cracks on the ground after the quake.
“Most likely, nakita ko na yung ibang mga pictures, marami pong landslide na mangayayari. Kombinasyon po ito ng lindol and ‘pag dumating ‘yong ulan o bagyo, mas puwede pang magkaroon ng landslide kasi mahuna na ang mga lupa,” Solidum said.
Solidum also advised the residents whose houses and buildings have been affected by the quake to consult local engineers. He also warned the public to avoid entering damaged homes and buildings due to expected aftershocks. Further damage is expected.
