Eatery in Valenzuela City Goes Viral For Offering P2.00 Lugaw to Customers

A certain eatery in Valenzuela City goes viral and earns instant popularity because of its affordable “Lugaw” worth P2.00.

The Facebook page Manuel Olazo Food and Travel has shared the video footage of a small karinderya along Pio Valenzuela Road in Valenzuela City. The video garnered various reactions from the online community.

In the video, it can be seen that a karinderya owner identified as “Mang Romy” is selling a very affordable ‘lugaw’ to his customer. The delicious porridge is only P2.00, which is very affordable, especially for the less fortunate people.

Romeo “Mang Romy” Velasco started his lugawan business in 1974 at McArthur Street. He sells a cup of porridge for P0.25 and it only increases to P1.35 after 48 years. He also brags about the delicious taste of his affordable lugaw.

“Walang mantika [‘yong lugaw ko]. Hindi sila nasusuyang kumain, hanggang 3, hanggang 4 na tasa, nakakakain sila. Hindi kamukha noong iba na lumulutang sa taba,” Velasco said.

Velasco only wants to provide affordable food to the public, especially to the less-fortunate people. He admits that he had no profit from selling ‘lugaw’ and just earn from his other dishes including tokwa’t-baboy.

Mang Romy was able to send his children to college because of his business. He can also financially support his wife taking her master’s degree in America because of his ‘lugaw’.

The elderly vendor also earned an influential food business award. His kids are already inviting him to go to America but he refused to do so.

“Hindi ko sila iiwanan. Matagal na ako ine-encourage ng anak ko na pumunta ng Amerika, pero hindi ako nagpupunta.” Mang Romy added.

The latter also vowed to fill empty stomachs through his affordable lugaw even rice prices increase.
