Viral Hit-and-Run Suspect Can Still Register New Vehicle Although Banned from Driving, According to LTO
LTO said that the viral hit-and-run suspect can still register a new vehicle although he is permanently banned from driving.
On Friday (July 8, 2022), the Land Transportation Office said that the driver behind the viral hit-and-run incident in Mandaluyong City identified as Jose Antonio San Vicente can still purchase and register new vehicles.
LTO officer-in-charge lawyer Romeo Vera Cruz said that San Vicente has still the right to buy a new motor vehicle. However, the suspect is disqualified from having a driver’s license and banned from driving.
“He can buy a new car, he just can’t operate that vehicle…we don’t have the authority to stop [him from buying] because it is his right to buy a motor vehicle, that’s really a possibility. But if he’s caught driving without a license, he [can be arrested]…We cannot prevent that,” Vera Cruz said.
The LTO official also urged the public to continue to report similar incidents because it helps authorities to take action and identify suspects. He also described such videos on Facebook as helpful.
“Those videos posted on Facebook are very helpful, and those can be used. That is sufficient,” Vera Cruz said in Filipino. This is the process: ‘When we see a video and then we identify it, we show cause order to the owner because we don’t know who is driving,” Vera Cruz added.
San Vicente is facing charges of frustrated murder and abandonment of one’s victim. However, he was still free while the preliminary investigation is ongoing.
