Over 2 Million Filipinos Benefited From Free College Education Law, CHED Says
FREE COLLEGE – CHED said that over two million Filipino students have benefited from the free college education law.
A few years ago, President Rodrigo Duterte approved the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act with the aim to help the less-fortunate Filipino students to complete their studies amid poverty.
A lot of poor students from state colleges and state universities were able to benefit from the program. The program both helped the students and parents who were struggling to pay the tuition fees.
On Tuesday (May 31, 2022), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) said that nearly two million Filipino students were able to avail the free college law under the Duterte administration.
CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera III said that about 1.97 million students in 220 state and local universities and colleges have benefited from the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.
The beneficiaries benefited from free tuition and miscellaneous fees. About 364,168 students have benefited from the Tertiary Education Subsidy and Tulong Dunong Program.

De Vera made the elaboration during the Day 2 of the Duterte Legacy Summit, which states the accomplishments of the Duterte Administration. He also explained that most beneficiaries came from regions with the highest poverty rate.
“There is a direct correlation between poverty incidence and the number of grantees. This shows that clearly, this is an anti-poverty program,” de Vera said.
