DOH Declare Dengue Outbreak in Zamboanga City Due to Increasing Cases
The authorities have declared a dengue outbreak in Zamboanga City after the dengue cases reached over 2, 000.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that DOH-Region IX declared a dengue outbreak in Zamboanga City. 19 dengue patients have already passed away due to the mosquito-borne disease.
“It is the local government that declared it, based on their data submitted,” Duque said.
The Department of Health – Region IX declared the outbreak after dengue cases reached more than 2, 000 from the month of January up to May 14, 2022. The figure is quite bigger compared to 107 reported cases in 2021.
The barangayswith high dengue cases have launched their own anti-dengue campaign to prevent the increasing cases of dengue. The villages conduct fogging operations and other measures to remove dengue-causing mosquitoes in the area.
DOH’s field epidemiologists have also started to monitor the dengue cases in Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur and Isabela City in Basilan. Dengue cases are expected to increase after the rainy season officially started, according to Duque.
“It is now being investigated by our field epidemiologists to find out that the number of cases has gone past the alert level, also the outbreak level,” Duque said.
The DOH official also emphasized the importance of “4S” to prevent dengue. He advised the public to observe the following measures:
- Search and destroy of mosquito-breeding sites
- Self-protection measures by wearing long pants and sleeves
- Seek early consultation
- Support of fogging or spraying
