Roro Vessel Passengers Struggled to Survive after Ship Caught Fire on Route to Real, Quezon

RORO VESSEL PASSENGERS – Some passengers of Mercraft 2 revealed the happenings when the ship caught fire on its way to Real, Quezon.

In Quezon, one of the highly visited islands is Polillo Island. To get there, you need to take a boat trip from the mainland. You can either take the fast craft wherein the estimated travel time is two (2) hours or a roro vessel that may take three (3) hours to get to the island.

Polillo Island is also home to a lot of residents. However, many people in Polillo are currently in a state of shock with some families grieving over the loss of their loved ones after a roro vessel caught fire on its way to Real, Quezon.

There are more than 120 Roro vessel passengers aboard the Mercraft 2 when the ship caught fire. The passengers jumped into the water.

Some of the roro vessel passengers have shared the happenings when the ship caught fire. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, two of the passengers, Wally and Shiena Calleja, jumped into the water when they saw the fire. Wally who is a stroke survivor and can’t freely move was supposedly off to Infanta with his daughter for his check-up.

According to Wally, he and his daughter were holding each other’s hands when they jumped. Shiena stressed that there was a stampede as people were panicking. She was just pulling her father’s hand so they can jump into the water.

Also one of the roro vessel passengers was a woman identified as Shirley. She was with her husband and their two (2) grandchildren. They jumped into the water. She and her grandchildren survived but her husband is one of those who died in the incident. They are celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary today.

According to Shirley, there was a sudden explosion and when she looked back, she saw that there was already fire and it spread fast. Based on the report, her husband and their grandchild were together when they jumped into the water.

Around 40 roro vessel passengers were brought to a hospital in Infanta. Some of them were already transferred to Lucena and others were brought to Manila.
