Roro Vessel w/ Over 120 Passengers Catches Fire on Its Way to Real, Quezon
RORO VESSEL – Mercraft 2 with more than 120 passengers caught fire while it was on its way from Polillo Island to Real, Quezon.
Yesterday, an accident took place in Quezon. A roro vessel, the Mercraft 2, caught fire while it was on its way to Real. More than 120 passengers were aboard the vessel and some were supposedly off to Infanta for a check-up.
The vessel left Polillo Island at around 5:00 a.m. According to some of the passengers, there was an explosion and then they noticed the fire that spread fast. Most of them rushed to jump into the water in pursuit of escaping the fire and with the fear that the vessel might explode.
According to some of the passengers, they were not able to find survival kits or life jackets inside the vessel. The local government of Polillo is passing a resolution seeking the temporary halting of the trips of Mercraft vessels.
The owner of the vessel assured the passengers and their families that their assistance is ready. More than 40 of the passengers were brought to a hospital in Infanta and others were already transferred to hospitals in Lucena and Manila.
Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, seven (7) died from the fire incident involving the roro vessel “Mercraft 2” and more than 20 were injured. Most of the passengers with mild injuries are confined in Claro M. Recto Hospital in Infanta while those were serious injuries were brought to Quezon Medical Center in Lucena.
Those who witnessed the incident stressed that the water can no longer put down the fire as it spread fast. They threw life jackets and other survival equipment to the passengers who are in the water to help them.
