For 10 years, we won’t be able to see Will Smith attending the Oscars and this is his reaction to this.
WILL SMITH – Hollywood star Will Smith accepts and respects after the Academy decided to ban him for 10 years from attending the Oscars.
What has apparently shocked the world during this year’s Oscars awarding is the slapping incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock. The reaction from the actor stemmed from the comedian’s joke about his wife’s bald head. That night, Smith apologized as he also won the best actor award.
Jada Pinkett-Smith is Smith’s wife who decided to shave her head because of alopecia and during that event, the joke did not suit Will. He came up on stage and in front of other celebrities, he slapped the comedian.
And following this incident, the officials of the Academy finally came up with a decision and that is to ban Will from attending for 10 years. Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement, “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”
Will has been banned to attend but that doesn’t mean he can’t be nominated or win. He can still receive nominations and still win only that he is not allowed to attend.
The statement also commended how Rock maintained his composure after being slapped. It said, “We want to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.”
In a statement to CNN, Will said that he “accepts and respects” the decision of the Academy. To recall, shortly after the incident, Will resigned from the Academy. His resignation means that he is no longer a part of the voting body.
