Filipino People Trooped to Churches to Receive Ash Crosses During Ash Wednesday
ASH WEDNESDAY – The Filipino people have trooped to Churches early Wednesday morning (March 2, 2022) to observe the start of the Lenten Season.
Ash Wednesday is a Christian holy day of prayer and fasting. It is traditionally observed by Western Christians. It marks the start of the Lenten season wherein the believers received ash crosses on their foreheads.
Priests or church personnel imposing the ash cross usually utter the following words to the participants; “Repent, and believe in the Gospel, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
On Wednesday, long queues of Filipino devotees have trooped at various churches in different province in the Philippines to observe Ash Wednesday. The Catholic believers attend the mass for the imposition of ash on their foreheads.
The observance of this religious event has been canceled for two years due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The religious practice has been allowed again provided that health protocols will be strictly implemented.
Earlier, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) announced that only priests can sprinkle ash on the heads of mass goers in compliance with the health protocols and prevent the spread of the disease.
CBCP Episcopal Commission on Liturgy Chairman Bishop Victor Bendico signed the guidelines for Ash Wednesday.
“The sprinkling of ashes on the crown will remain an option. We have been reminded last year that this option is an ‘opportunity to catechize our people on both the penitential and baptismal characters of the Lenten season,” Bendico said.
