CBCP Says Pinoy Catholics Now Allowed to Receive Ash Crosses on Ash Wednesday

Pinoy Catholics will be allowed to receive ash cross on Ash Wednesday two years after breaking tradition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) announced the resumption of the sprinkling of ashes after two years. The organization released a guideline regarding the event.

CBCP Episcopal Commission on Liturgy said that receiving of ash crosses will still be optional. Strict implementation of the health safety protocols will be observed during the event to ensure the safety of the devotees.

“We have been reminded last year that this option is an opportunity to catechize our people on both the penitential and baptismal characters of the Lenten season,” the commission said.

The Catholic believers can join the celebration of Palm Sunday on April 10, 2022 online. The devotees can listen to the Scriptural reading and the prayer of blessing as CPCP claimed that there is no need for holy water blessing.

CBCP will also limit the route of processions on streets and roads to observe the physical distancing measure. The committee will not recommend the usage of “carosas” or “andas” to main the social distancing.

Meanwhile, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Black Saturday will fall on April 14, 15 and 16, 2022. The easer Sunday will fall on April 17, 2022.

The commission said that Easter Vigil will be held in Cathedral and parish churches.

“Special permission is to be given by the Ordinary of the place for those, which will becelebrated in chapels and oratories,” It said.
