Volunteer Teachers Pushing Wooden Trolley School in Quezon Helps Kids to Keep Education on Track Earns Praises
TAGKAWAYAN, Quezon – A wooden trolley school in Quezon province is helping the young kids to keep their education on track.
Four young teachers in Quezon Province were pushing a wooden trolley rumbles carrying a whiteboard, colorful charts, and a stack of books. Two teachers were sitting on the front while the two others at the back were pushing the cart with their feet.
The trolley serves as tiny mobile school to young kids in several villages in the provinces. The mobile school travels from one village to another at least three times a week to help the students.
The program aims to help the children near the municipality of Tagkawayan to keep their study on track after the schools shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tagkawayan has a population of 54, 000 and it is located about 176 kilometers southeast of Manila.
There are nine volunteer teachers who operate the trolley. One of them is Shaira Berdin who emphasized the importance of education. She said that children were crouching on the grass along the railway track while reading books.
In the Philippines, a lot of Filipino children have were lacking of online learning resources such as computers, phones and internet. Some students have to climb trees and roofs just to get a stable network connection.
The volunteers teach math and reading to over 60 children while pushing the trolley like a scooter. The program started in November after receiving donations, which were used to purchase learning materials for their classes.
“Most of these volunteers come from poor backgrounds. They’ve also experienced hardships in life, which is why they want to help children in need,” 26-year-old teacher Samboy de Leon Niala said.
