Mayor Isko Moreno Speaks on Qualifications in Running for President in PH
MAYOR ISKO MORENO – The Manila Mayor and presidential candidate for Election 2022 is in favor of changing the qualifications for president.
Currently, talks about the upcoming election are rampant on social media platforms as the next poll is drawing near. The Filipinos are set to elect the next president and vice president of the Philippines in May 2022. Other national and local elections are also set to be held.
With regards to the presidential bid, currently, there are ten (10) candidates that remain on the official ballot for the next election according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec). One of them is Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, the standard-bearer of Aksyon Demokratiko.
Moreno ran for senator in 2016 but he did not secure a seat in the upper chamber of the legislative body. During the 2019 midterm election, he won mayor of Manila City.
Recently, presidential candidates started appearing in interviews revealing their standpoint on certain key issues. In an interview with Boy Abunda, Mayor Isko Moreno revealed his openness to changing the qualifications required of a president. Under the current Constitution, the following are required for anyone who wants to run for president of the country:
- at least 40 years old
- a registered voter
- able to read and write
- a Filipino citizen by birth
- a resident of the Philippines for at least 10 years immediately preceding election
Mayor Isko is in favor of requiring a presidential aspirant of a certain number of years in the government or in public service. On the other side, he is not in favor of requiring a college degree. He stressed that the government has to make sure first that education is available to everyone.
According to the Manila Mayor, the state is also at fault for not making education available to everyone. During the interview, he stressed that, in the current situation, the Filipinos really need to come to the city to be able to get to college.
