Bread Manufacturers Seek Hike on Prices of Pinoy Pandesal & Pinoy Tasty

Bread Manufacturers Propose Price Hike on Pinoy Pandesal & Pinoy Tasty

A group of bread manufacturers are seeking an increase on prices of Pinoy Pandesal and Pinoy Tasty as prices of ingredients surge.

Several bakeries have imposed an increase on prices of affordable Pinoy Pandesal and Pinoy Tasty. The bake shops implement an increase due to the rising prices of ingrediets used to make breads.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said that the Philippine Baking Industry Group (PhilBaking) is seeking an increase of P2.50 for each pack of Pinoy Pandesal and up to P4.50 for Pinoy Tasty.

Currently, Pinoy Pandesal containing 10 pieces of breads costs P21.50 while a pack of Pinoy Tasty costs P35. PhilBaking is seeking an increase of P2.50 for Pinoy Pandesal and P4.50 per pack of Pinoy Tasty.

PhilBaking president Johnlu Koa explained that Philippines have no wheat and Filipino bakers are buying expensive wheat for quality products. The price of wheat depends on global prices.

“Dahil tayo ay walang sariling trigo, bumibili tayo sa ibang bansa. Siyempre, we are dependent doon sa global prices. Parang gasolina ‘yan Bakers are stuck with expensive wheat if they still want quality,” Koa said.

DTI claimed that the last price increase for Pinoy Pandesal and Pinoy Tasty was five years ago. The agency said that there is ample basis to impose a price hike. DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said that price hike may range from P1.00 – P2.00.

Some bread shops will adjust the size of breads instead of imposing a price hike.

“Ire-recover lang nila. They will just recover what they lost over the past two years. Expectation ko should be P0.50 or P1,” Laban Konsumer president Atty. Vic Dimagiba said.
