And the queen of pearls in the Philippines is the former actress and socialite Gretchen Barretto. She’s a big collector of anything pearl for a piece of jewelry and her fascination for pearls started when her daughter Dominique Cojuangco was just 10 months old. The first person to give her a couple of sets of necklaces and earrings during her daughter’s first birthday is her long-time partner, business tycoon Tonyboy Cojuangco.

Her collection of pearls ranges from necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and pendants in different shapes: drop, oval, button, baroque, semi-baroque or circled, and round. The value of each piece depends on its size, skin purity whether flawless, medium spotted, or spotted, and luster (fire, excellent, and dull).

The most expensive color of pearls is champagne in her collection as seen in her past posts in her deleted Instagram account, she has pieces in white, silver, creme rose, champagne, deep gold, and even multi-colored strands. And just recently, she was named as the pearl ambassadress of the said international brand.

She was given a plaque signed by owners Jacques Branellec and Manuel Cojuangco and it was presented to her after buying new princess-style pearl necklaces and a pair of golden South Sea pearl earrings. She quipped as she received the plaque, “Oh, wow! What is my special talent to deserve the plaque?”

A strand of princess-style white pearl necklace from Jewelmer at 13 to 16-mm has an average price of USD64,000 or Php 3,298,624.00 approximately and a single rope can reach at least Php 8 million.
