NBI Says Drug Lord Kerwin Espinosa Tries to Escape Through Air Vent

Drug Lord Kerwin Espinosa Tries to Escape From NBI Detention Facility

The National Bureau of Investigation reported that drug lord Roland “Kerwin” Espinosa tried to escape through the air vent.

NBI officer in charge Eric Distor reported that Espinosa together with two other detainees attempted to escape from the NBI’s detention facility on Taft Avenue last January 13, 2022 (Thursday).

Espinosa and the other inmates tried to escape through the air ventilation of the facility. The exhaust fan has been deformed, which makes a hole fit for a detainee to escape when removed.

NBI’s Security Management Section new head and executive officer launched a probe regarding the incident and learned the plan about the supposed escape. The agency’s personnel immediately conduct an inspection after receiving reports.

“In one of the cells of the jail, the raiding team of [NBI] agents observed a deformed exhaust fan, which when removed, exposed a hole fit for a detainee to escape,” Distor said.

Distor ordered his men to conduct tighter security and frequent inspections at the jail cells inside the detention facility to prevent such incidents. Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra instructed the agency to submit a report.

“I have instructed the agency to intensify intelligence work and tighten… security in its detention facilit[ies], especially with respect to high-profile detainees such as Kerwin Espinosa,” Guavarra said.

The incident happened almost a month Makati City court cleared him and three other detainees from criminal liabilities regarding drug trafficking case in 2013 due to lack of evidence.

Espinosas have been arrested for being high-profile targets of President Duterte’s drug war. Kerwin has pending criminal cases before the Manila RTC.
