Duterte To Announce Fate Of Face Shields In PH Later Says Roque

DUTERTE FACE SHIELD UPDATE – Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte would announce the fate of Face Shields in the Philippines later.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, the use of face masks and face shields became mandatory for public spaces. However, despite experts saying face shields aren’t necessary, the mandate continued throughout the year.

But, as 2021 comes to a close and cities have gotten lowered COVID-19 caseloads, some local government units are already lifting the mandate. However, according to Roque, Duterte would have the ultimate say.

Roque said Duterte would make the announcement during his weekly national address. Meanwhile, several key areas such as Manila, Davao, and Iloilo City already lifted their face shield mandates lacking the national governments’ go signal.

During a press briefing Roque stated:

Siguro po kung hindi batas ang pinag-uusapan, respeto na lang po sa ating Presidente dahil lahat naman po ng desisyon ng IATF ay desisyon ng Presidente

Furthermore, Roque emphasized that people won’t follow the President’s mandates if Mayors themselves aren’t following his orders. “Hindi po pupuwede kasing nagkakaniya-kaniya sa panahon ng pandemya“, stressed Roque.

During the pandemic, officials have made questionable decisions regarding COVID-19 protocols. Among these was the implementation of back shields for motorcycles to avoid the spread of COVID-19 between riders and their passengers. Additionally, there was also the no-talking policy when riding public transport.

Now, as the Philippines is seeing lower cases, restrictions are gradually lowered. Still, going into the holidays, the Department of Health (DOH) and other offices urge the Filipino people to remain vigilant when it comes to the virus.
